Ancient Black Dragon Monster D&D 5e (5th Edition)


  • Legendary Resistance(3/Day): The ancient black dragon can change its outcome when it makes a failed saving throw and choose to succeed instead.


  • Multiattack: The dragon can use its action, Frightful Presence and then make 3 attacks – one by biting and two using its claws.

1. Bite: Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d10 + 7) piercing damage plus 5 (1d10) lightning damage.

2. Claw: Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d6 + 7) slashing damage.

3. Tail: Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d8 + 7) bludgeoning damage.

  • Frightful Presence: The dragon can select any creature that is within 120 ft range and has an awareness of it, the creature has to make a successful DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or get frightened for one minute. The creature can redo the saving throw at the end of its every turn, after a successful throw, the effect will end. When the effect ends due to the end of its duration or the creature making a successful throw, the creature will become immune to it for the next 24 hours.
  • Acid Breath: The dragon breathes out acid in a 90 ft line in front of it which is 10 feet wide and any creature that is inside the area has to perform a successful DC 22 Dexterity throw. The creature will take 67(15d8) acid damage on a failed saving throw or half of that damage on a successful saving throw.

Legendary Actions

The ancient black dragon gets to choose between the 3 legendary actions noted below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only if the turn before it was of another creature. Legendary actions exhausted by the dragon is regained for another use on its next turn.

  • Detect : The dragon performs a Wisdom(perception) check..
  • Tail Attack : The dragon makes an attack with its tail.
  • Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions) : The dragon’s wings start moving vigorously and any creature that is near the range of 15 ft. from the dragon will have to perform a successful DC 23 Dexterity saving throw or take 15(2d6 +6) bludgeoning damage and get knocked down. The dragon can then use its wings to fly but only for half its flying speed.
