Ancient Blue Dragon Monster D&D 5e (5th Edition)


  • Legendary Resistance(3/Day): When the ancient blue dragon fails to perform a successful saving throw, it can change the outcome of the throw and make sure it succeeds instead.


  • Multiattack: The ancient blue dragon can use Frightful Presence after which it is followed by three attacks: one with a bite and the other two using its claws.
  1. Bite: Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d10 + 7) piercing damage plus 5 (1d10) lightning damage.
  2. Claw: Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d6 + 7) slashing damage.
  3. Tail: Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d8 + 7) bludgeoning damage.
  • Frightful Presence: Any creature that the dragon chooses and also within 120 ft range of the dragon and aware of it must complete a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw successfully or it will get frightened for a minute. The creature gets to perform the saving throw after each of its turns, making the effect end instantly on a successful throw. After the effect ends or the creature successfully performs a saving throw to end it, it will gain immunity to Frightful presence for the next 24 hours.
  • Lightning Breath(Recharge 5-6): The ancient blue dragon blows out lightning in a 120 feet area ahead of it with a width of 10 feet. All creatures on its path will have to make a DC 23 Dexterity saving throw, they will take 88(16d10) lightning damage if the save fails and half of the damage if the saving throw is successful.

Legendary Actions

The 5e ancient blue dragon can choose any of the 3 legendary actions from below for itself. Just one can be used at a specific time and only after another creature’s turn. Legendary Actions used will refresh for re-use on the creature’s next turn.

  • Detect: A wisdom(perception) check is performed by the dragon.
  • Tail Attack: The dragon uses its tail to attack.
  • Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions): The dragon flaps its wings aggressively. Any creature near 10 feet of the dragon will have to take a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw successfully otherwise take 16(2d6 +9) inflicting damage and be knocked to proneness. The dragon will be able to fly for half its flying speed after this.
