The Cat Lord, the divine being responsible for the creation of the Tabaxi, gifted each individual Tabaxi with one of the specific feline traits below.
Wandering Outcasts:
In DnD 5e, most Tabaxi remain in their distant homelands, content to dwell in small clans. They hunt for food, craft goods, largely keep to themselves. However, those gifted with curiosity by the Cat Lord are compelled to wander far and wide, seeking out artifacts, lore, and stories.
Those who survive this period of wanderlust return home in their elder years to share these artifacts and stories out of the outside world; thus, how the Tabaxi remain isolated yet never ignorant of the world beyond their homeland.
Barterers Of Lore:
Rather than treasuring material things, these Tabaxi treasure knowledge above all. A chest of gold or rare artifacts may be of use to the Tabaxi, but they are not transfixed or interested in these material possessions. Through the Tabaxi’s eyes, the gathering of wealth is like packing amenities for a long time or for a long trip, they may need these items but are of little concern or interest beyond that. Instead, the Tabaxi value knowledge and new experiences the world has to offer.
Tabaxi gifted as Barterers of Lore make excellent Bards and Monks. Their ears perk up in a busy tavern, teasing out lore and stories with offers of food, coin, drink, and other artifacts. On occasion, the Tabaxi may walk away with empty purses, mulling over the stories and rumors like they collected like a miser counting coins.
Although material wealth and items hold little attraction, due to their obsession with lore and knowledge, Tabaxi have insatiable desires to find and inspect ancient relics, magical items, and other rare artifacts. Aside from the power such items might confer, Tabaxi take the great joy in unraveling the lore and stories behind the creation of these items and the history of their use.
Fleeting Fancies:
These wandering Tabaxi are mercurial creatures, trading one passion/obsession for the next as the whim strikes. Their desire burns bright, but once this desire is met, it dissipates only to be replaced with a new passion/obsession.
A Tabaxi rogue can gleefully spend many months plotting to steal a strange gem from a noble, only to trade it for passage on a ship or a week of lodging. The Tabaxi are likely to take extensive notes or memorize every facet of the gem but before passing it on, but the gem holds no more allure once its secrets have been laid bare.
Tinkers And Minstrels:
Curiosity drives most of the Tabaxi found outside their homeland, but not all of them are bound to become adventurers. Those who seek a safer path for satisfying their obsessions become wandering tinkers and minstrels.
These Tabaxi work in small groups,, usually consisting of an elder who can guide up to four young Tabaxi learning their way in the world. They move from settlement to settlement by small, colorful wagons. When they arrive, they set up a small stage in the public square, where they sing, tell stories, play instruments and offer exotic goods as trade for items which spark their interest.
The Tabaxi accept gold, reluctantly, but are much more interested in objects or lore as payment. These wanderers prefer to keep to civilized realms, choosing to bargain rather than pursue more dangerous methods of satiating their curiosity. Nevertheless, they are not above discreet theft as a means to get their claws on a particularly interesting item should the owner refuse to sell or trade for it.
